I. Choose 5 OTPs without looking at the questions:
1. Mitch/Jamie [Zoo]
2. Jackson/Chloe [Zoo]
3. Deeks/Kensi [NCIS: LA]
4. Amy/Jonah [Superstore]
5. Miles/Rachel [Revolution]
(FEEL FREE TO STEAL THIS)
1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 5?
1x13, basically five seconds after Miles reacted to the news of her still being alive.
2. Have you ever read fanfiction about 2?
I have not found anyone who's written it (nor have I looked), so no.
3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr ID?
[Amy/Jonah] Can't say as it has.
4. If 3 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?
I would not be thrilled, but I would still be capable of being chill and accepting it because I have deliberately kept their wonder and joy at arm's length. Secretly, that's why I abandoned my attempt to catch up on them last year where it lay. They've collected a whole 'nother year of being happy together since then, and I think it is a coping mechanism that I'm going to keep them at arm's length until they end happy, and then I will bask in everlasting joy. Or I will know when to quit the catchup for a happy ending before heartbreak eats my soul.
5. Why is 1 so important?
Because they ping one of my favorite tropes: grumpy middle-aged man irresistibly charmed by cheerful young ray of sunshine that's been missing from his life. When I filled out this meme, they had "taken a turn down Protective Road, in which the sunshine is bitter and broken and practicing avoidance, so to stay connected he is instead setting up protective shields in her defense and going to bat for her with anyone who tries to push her out." And now they're important for the fact that words like "love" and the "save or die trying" trope are being floated around based off the smallest amount of physical intimacy I have seen two people not written by Stephenie Meyer share in a very long time.
6. Is 4 a funny ship or a serious ship?
One of my rare funny ones.
7. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?
Well this one I gotta hand to Deeks and Kensi, because they are so pretty in the face and curly hair and tall-n-slim departments, and they have so much chemistry I would ship the actors if they were not already family by marriage (fyi that makes it all both weirder and better).
8. Of all the ships, which ship has the strongest bond?
I want to say Deeks and Kensi again, but Miles and Rachel have been coming back to each other for 20+ years despite a marriage standing in their way and even after the whole period-of-unlawful-imprisonment thing, so.
9. How many times have you read/watched 2’s fandom?
Not sure quite how to answer. Technically just the once straight through, but I mean...how do you measure, measure a year? ♫In episodes, and ship clips, in gifsets and posts of flailing. In screen caps; Tumblr; in heartache and strife...♫
10. Which ship lasted the longest?
In terms of uninterrupted time -- even just "time where they were not into other people, if not together" -- that would be Deeks and Kensi again.
11. How many times, if ever, has 5 broken up?
Not sure on the official count, their relationship is so ill-defined. I'm guessing at least two attempts were made to end it pre-Blackout.
12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 1 or 3?
Mitch and Jamie are handily surviving an animal apocalypse [edit: I'M STICKING WITH "ARE"], so as badass as OTP: Guns-A-Blazin' is, I'm rooting for an over-the-hill scientist and an uncommonly resourceful young journalist.
13. Did 4 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
No, because they haven't got one. [Amy/Jonah]
14. Is 5 still together?
YES.* The gang took down the Nanotech and then Miles proceeded to hang up his sword and play house with his two girls as the world slowly returned to normal, the end.
*SHUT UP, TERRIBLE COMIC BOOK.
15. Is 1 canon?
Well they're sure suffering the burden of being the show's apparent canon endgame, aren't they?
16. If all five ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
P. sure Miles and Rachel have proven they can systematically kill their way through anything, with anything. Guns, swords, rocket launchers, screwdrivers -- nothing is too big or too small.
17. Has anyone ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?
Eh, a few. The Nanotech in Ben form. Gene. Bass, of course. If anyone SHOULD be, it's Nora, but she was real excellent about not trying to stake a futile claim. That's how she stayed on my good side.
18. Which ship(s) would you defend to the death and beyond?
Mitch and Jamie.[finale spoiler, since I'm still hiding it, I guess]"Death and beyond" is actually where we're at now, canon-wise.
19. Have you ever spent hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?
That's really the only way I know how to be with them.
20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the five ships to break up forever, which ship would you sink?
Amy/Jonah in a heartbeat. That witch isn't even evil. She's trying to save me from my shipping sins.
II. Also, I wrote up a thing in July that I really should have posted then, because the best answer is "Supergirl, literally Supergirl herself," but I'm going to post it now anyway. For discussion purposes! Because I could still use more examples. And because I like my phrasing too much to let it die in a recycling bin without seeing the light of day.
Original Post: "I was contemplating Zoo the other day, as I almost never do, and specifically how two of the men on this show have thus far been portrayed as pretty besotted while their paramours, amenable to kissing as they are, have not appeared anywhere near the level of reciprocation that allows them to throw around the word 'love.'
It reminded me of other Great Piners I have enjoyed in the past, from Pine King Halpert to his challenger Chuck, to veteran survivors of rejection Deeks on NCIS: LA and Booth on Bones, and now I'm really curious: are there any shows where women are the most emotionally invested first, and it takes the men time to come around? Specifically, I'm looking for stories where the couple is in fact the show's canon OTP, or at least one of them -- not a Karen Fillipelli tragedy.
Besides Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I need women whose endgame I can empathize with.
I don't know if it's just the fact that I don't remember that kind of thing because it's way less exciting than stories where the guy falls first, or if it is actually that rare, but I'm racking my brain and I'm coming up with like...maybe Amita on Numb3rs? That was definitely mutual attraction, but it was also Amita being frustrated that Charlie wasn't doing much about it.
Oh -- Sara Sidle on CSI, yes? (2000-2005 was so long ago...and yes, this did used to be one of my top 5 OTPs, and it was actually my first huge one after Mulder/Scully, and it is hella embarrassing that I can't remember its origin. More embarrassing than saying "hella")
Rachel/Finn on Glee, perhaps...but see, that falls under the CEG umbrella of "he is not a prize."
But along those lines, Emma Pillsbury would qualify, I think. It's hard to tell due to my inability to want nice things for her, and also being #Team Will's Baby-Crazy Ex-Wife 5eva. I hope this doesn't mean I have unconsciously bought into the idea that pining women are more often seen as pathetic. I'm actively aiming to prove otherwise.
So here's hoping you can provide more examples! As much as I complain about UST, I do sometimes enjoy a heady dose of the 'I will do anything for you, please see me' period if I know (or can hope) it ends well."
[edit: I GOT ONE. Jess Parker on Primeval]
III. So the Rizzoli & Isles series finale aired last Monday, and hanging out in the Tumblr tag was a good way to repress my anxiety about Zoo.
It should be noted that 100% of the reactions were "I CAN'T BELIEVE NO CANON GAY." (except for mine, which was "oh HELL YEAH look who's really moving down where Agent Dean lives; gosh I wonder if she might be ready for someone like him now")
People were pretty adorable about it and I reblogged some things that made me laugh, but despite standing by my aforementioned statement that I would consider rolling with the show version of these characters as an F/F pairing, I also kind of love so much that in an exit interview with the showrunner, the interviewer asks, "So
And even though it is the most non-threatening, consequence-free opportunity possible for a showrunner to just say, "yeah, we respect our fans' interpretation of the characters," said showrunner is STILL doubling down on their defenses and being like, "no. We just didn't write them into relationships at the end because they are Strong Independent Women."
#i'm sCREAMING that the fandom really is making this entire thing up with no validation from above.
(And it's a female showrunner. Oh, what a rare breed. What else has she produced, this Jan Nash? Hmm...Without a Trace! Unforgettable, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Made in Jersey, Caroline in the City...huh. You seem to pick promising things; we should talk more.)
