Time for me to face the music that everyone else left on LJ has posted about this week.

Photobucket has apparently gone full jerk, and unlike the mass LJ exodus I will bitch about until the end of time, this one is deserved, mostly because quitting them is actually mandatory for anyone who doesn't want to pay $400 a year to use their site for anything more than cloud storage, such as "actually hotlink photos to their blog or other website." It doesn't seem to have yelled at me yet, but I went ahead and downloaded all my photos off of there in the handily offered zip files anyway, just in case they actually lock access to them (I can't tell if they actually lock your account in true ransomware mode, or just bork all your hotlinked pictures, but better safe than sorry).

[edit: oh damn. Two minutes ago I got the email confirming my pictures are in fact borked. But also, that you can access your account to download them anyway.]

That's around 1300 images across 8 or 9 years of my blog that are -- or soon will be -- essentially gone. Many are easily identifiable under the tag "screencap happy," and I can more or less identify the time period where the other photos are from, but I'm already exhausted and sad when I realize which Very Important Posts based around images are now imageless.

The question remains as to where exactly else I am going to host these pictures -- I don't even know what other free options exist, in terms of ones where you can upload screencaps and other things that are not photos you took yourself -- never mind when I'll have the heart to fix all the broken links again. They'll probably fit in the LJ scrapbook, but ugh, the amount of folder organization it would take...
