Wheee, I'm 21!

For all my cracks about how I'll bet American Idol tonight would be even more entertaining with the addition of alcohol, I have yet to taste any.  My sum total experience with alcohol is limited to two or three times in my youth when I reached for what I thought was my glass of Diet Coke on the counter and instead was my dad's glass of beer.  This resulted in an instant mouth full of burning and a frantic run for the sink to spit it out.

My birthday celebration consisted of the same thing it's been for most of my life, sitting around the table with my family with dinner of my choice (home-made enhanced chili tonight), followed by cake and the opening of presents.  Cake was Boston Creme style, very tasty.  And I received a small wardrobe; 2 shirts and 3 pairs of pants.  One shirt is beautiful, slate blue long-sleeve tee with rhinestones and abstract designs on the front;  the other was a short-sleeve plaid blouse.  It has been suggested that at some point in my professional life I will need to learn to wear button-down shirts on a regular basis, but at the moment I strongly dislike them.  And the plaid pattern didn't help matters, so that's going back.

My dad did go out looking for a good introductory drink for me, but I have to say I was sorely disappointed by its appearance.  It's supposedly a German white wine, but the bottle is brown.  Making the liquid look brown. Add that to all the German-style lettering and wording, and it looks like beer.  Which leaves me dejected because I've been hinting for months that the only thing that's ever tempted me to try a drink have been wine coolers, with all their pretty decorations and lovely looking bottles.  I'm certain I have specifically name-dropped "Arbor Mist" at least three times.  Yes, I know looks don't always equal taste, but I have a feeling that it's all going to taste nasty to me anyway - I might as well go in hoping it has hint of fruity taste in addition to whatever alcohol tastes like.

Might try some of the stuff tonight anyway; have to run off to watch AI.  I heard rumors of a theme involving "pop songs" and possibly GWEN STEFANI which would totally almost make up for everything else about this season so far.  And then it's a new episode of House for my birthday, yay!  (okay, I lied.  There are in fact two lines of fandom things in this post.  But that's it)

Au revoir!

[Edited to add: Yep, tried it.  Took all of two sips - it tasted like cough medicine.  It also had a rather pungent odor to it, not at all appealing, and in retrospect Mom thinks it is quite possibly the worst-tasting wine she's ever had.  Delightful.  They have promised to find something better tomorrow.

And thanks for all the happy birthday wishes.  Nothing like having a birthday to kickstart the chatter.  If my Facebook wall were a living being, it would have keeled over from the shock of so much traffic today.]

I would hardly count you as a sucky friend, given that you're busy with end-of-college plans. (I have my head stuck in the sand, denying that I will in the not so distant future have to deal with the same stuff)

Also, I am giggling madly over my LJ gift. Thank you!

Hey! Happy Birthday!!!

I have a hard time with wine also. When at home I like to drink the Boone's Farm (which is horribly trashy but so tasty). You'll just have to venture to the liquor store yourself now and purchase a pretty bottle. May I recommend NOT going to the liquor store on Chicago Ave and Lake Street in South Minneapolis? It is right by my house and you have to go past a police guard and a metal detector.

Happy Birthday!

I hope you had a great day and got everything you wanted.

It is rather amusing listening to you talk about alcohol like that as over here it's just a way of life ....... okay that doesn't sound very good does it .... well, it is - but not for me personally. Actually there was a frontpage article in the newspaper the other day about how they're thinking about raising the age-limit to 21 but like that's ever going to happen!

I recommend dry Martini with lemonade. Tastes waaaay better than any kind of wine!
