I AM SO HAPPY REID IS BACK.
And not that Reid features ever disappoint, but that was just SO good I can't get over. I forgot how great TV can be when it hits on every point -- guest star casting and chemistry, plot, pacing/suspense, AND emotional satisfaction in spades. Aubrey Plaza was amazing (p.s. I choose to believe this is what April Ludgate does in her off hours. At least in the AU version of the final season where she fnds her calling). Setting the majority of the episode at one restaurant table should have been terribly boring, but I was glued to the edge of my seat watching them bat the conversation back and forth.
Also can we talk about THE FACE when begging Morgan, "don't do this." I still haven't figured out what she latched onto as the heart of truth in that moment or how much of it was part of the trickery -- this is not the first time he has snookered lady killers with that face -- but I am enjoying the "you're really upset about this" comment at face value for maximum delight.
Other random delights:
-The 5 minutes we all got to pretend Spencer was on a real first date, being nervous and fumbling
-Dr. Tara Lewis looking hot as all hell in her dress and accidentally having more chemistry with Morgan as his fake dinner date than he has with his girlfriend.
-"I am trying to save your life, now let me do that."
-The Angry Spence Glare when warning her about what she put his very close personal friend through. Baby hedgehog does not like to fight, but he really does not like it when you hurt people he loves.
-Garcia officially gets to move out of the BAU and back home!
And then just in case that brilliant intellectual chess game wasn't enough, have a heap o' sad side story for Reid. With the mom entering a stage of Alzheimer's, creating a shadowy threat to his own legacy he has no way of knowing if he can avoid or not. (but for our own peace of mind, let's assume he can and also that he will live to be 100 with the stamina of Betty White) (edit: also Tumblr is like "lol science/medical research fail" on not being able to test for Alzheimer's markers, so I don't know what to believe anymore)
The show: HAHA, JUST KIDDING, DID YOU THINK THAT WOULD BE ALL? Reid hasn't been here in god knows how many episodes. DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU'RE NOT GETTING AN AFTER-DINNER TREAT.
Honestly, I almost wasn't prepared for the usual happy personal-moments closing scene because the whole episode felt so personal. And I was really, really happy with Drunk!Garcia running around being extra happy and affectionate and, according to her, so full of love that she's wearing too many clothes. BUT THEN.
Eyebrows is not good for a lot on this show, but he is magnificent at being a shoulder to cry on. I have lost count of all the things I love about this hug, starting with Reid's little nuzzly face-burying thing and his habit of locking his arms around the other person's waist, none of that one-armed manly bro hugging guys usually do. Also, no gif can quite capture his voice breaking on that last part.
BRB I HAVE TO GO BURY MYSELF IN A RETROGRADE WORLD TO RECOVER, PER USUAL.
Episode grade: A
P.S. I ran across what could be a pretty major spoiler for this series:
I have seen a couple of headlines that Something Big is coming for Morgan (maybe his contract is up?), and I haven't read any of them, but people on Tumblr seem really afraid he's going to die. One annoyed person in particular was like, "This is just going to be a vehicle for Reid's pain." To which my response was like...
I AM TERRIBLE, BUT ALSO, I would be super excited for this character death in a way I almost never feel about planned character deaths. And yes, I'd mostly be here for Reid pain. But it would be great because I'd get to enjoy characters I like mourning (bonus PENELOPE PAIN), and be able to understand their sadness rather than partying about an awful character being gone, yet suffer no long-term emotional devastation.
