Speaking of which, I'm not saying I'm mad that Billy Burke was too busy shooting Zoo for the writers to randomly come full circle and make Rizzoli/Agent Dean endgame for the finale**, I'm just saying, that would have been a beautiful way to end and I'm still vaguely hoping they pull it off under my nose.
Anyway, while trying to scope out whether or not she had a love interest already, I was on the wiki and saw this about one random love interest:
They had an unborn child together, Jane had a miscarriage.
Me: *screeching* GIVE IT. *thinks about it* Oh, wait, it says he was an old flame. So this is probably part of pre-show backstory?
Farther down: 'Jane had a miscarriage in season 5.'
*louder screeching* GIVE IT NOW.
Edit: got it. And now that I've finished playing with it by running the scenario through alternate contexts and characters and I'm letting Maura talk, I gotta say: the 'omg lesbianz' signal does not feel as far off the mark with these two as it usually does. You might win this one yet, fandom.
(I mean, were it not for my FIERCE DEFENSE of book canon ready to hit you in the face, even while simultaneously acknowledging that these are very different versions of the same characters).
**ETA #2: I'm scrolling the Tumblr tag and someone's bitching about the direction the show is going in for its ending, "one speech from mom about a two-day undercover gig and she’s realizing that she should give up what she loves, what she’s dedicated her life to? Just to take a safer job doing something somewhat related, near some random fed guy she just met,"
and I don't know about you but GOSH THAT SURE SOUNDS A LOT LIKE IT COULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AS AGENT DEAN.
#I don't think I can articulate just how hard I have fallen for the book version of this couple
#which ironically is only because the show that never intended to endgame them brought them to life first
