A Long and Disorganized Post of TV & Film Thoughts

It's been kind of a weird, sad week of screen-staring for no conceivable reason, so I might as well try to explain what I've been doing in that realm.

2. As you can see from the movie list, I have been soaking my brain in (mostly awful) movies this spring -- I pick them out based on specific actors, and I figure I might as well watch the whole thing and count it as "seen" instead of just trying to skip to their scenes -- and getting super frustrated that I can't seem to land on anything good.

3. Also I started watching Great News because I stumbled over it on Netflix.

4. Speaking of 90s shows + Netflix, there are a dozen episodes of The Magic School Bus on there (original version), so I randomly watched the first one, and ahhh yes. That's the good stuff. That show does not get old.

EDIT: New thing I wanna discuss!
5. After the aforementioned string of bad movies, I just gave up and put "horses" in the Netflix search bar and let it carry me over to the realm of children's movies, where I selected Albion: The Enchanted Stallion.

Bad/Good TV

Carol's Second Act is bad, y'all. It's dumb and bland and everyone is, like, so conscious that they're just making a dumb show for cheap laughs. The veterans are hamming it up as hard as they possibly can. The newbies feel a little more earnest (I really love the stern boss who doles out grudging admiration), but not enough to feel like real people instead of walking joke machines.

Unfortunately, it's bad in that exact comfort-brain-food way I like when I'm tired and I can't even pick what show to watch, much less handle anything emotionally complex, but am just alert enough to want something new instead of the thousandth repeat of a favorite sitcom. Which means I have seen...all 3 existing episodes and I'm watching it live right now. Sigh. (P.S. this show would be fully 25% better if Lucas Neff had his nice Raising Hope-era hair instead of a gross buzzcut.)
------
In better news, I have absolutely no energy available to discuss Survivor, but here is my rough Island of the Idols cast ranking (of the remaining contestants) now that we're 4 episodes deep:

TV Thought Roundup

I. Time to tolerate an (ancient) episode of Monk ("And the TV Star").

2. Sometimes I think about the days before social media, and all the amazing daily footage we must have missed unless an editing team decided to preserve it for us on a gag reel. For example, when I start my day being delighted by this clip on Daniela Ruah's Instagram of ECO being a musical weirdo on set. Though honestly, Guy With A Lighter really steals the show.
-------------
3. Apparently Pauley Perrette is leaving NCIS at the end of the year. She has shown incredible dedication to this series + unbridled enthusiasm for her character, so I begrudge her this even less than I begrudged Michael Weatherly, but boy, I dont know if I can handle a world without Gibbs-and-Abby. Gibbs will be the only must-see hook left for me...though he is a pretty good hook.
[I am still watching the show even though it has not been mentioned here since...May? Progress report:]
(side note: I got myself so wrapped up in Feelings about the horse episode last spring that I spoiled myself on the penultimate instead of watching it straight, and that knocked so many more Feelings on top of me that I'm still stalled there, luxuriating in my riches)

-------------
4. I have a thing to say about Kevin Can Wait. Not the show proper, just the behind the scenes stuff. (although speaking of the show proper -- there are so many hideous Dude Comedies on CBS right now that I'm actually looking longingly in search of Man With A Plan. Where did it go? I know it's renewed...)

Maybe I just need a (Very Long) TV post to get focused on work again?

Looking for NCIS: LA, I accidentally watched (most of) The Good Fight on TV last night, even though I've only seen The Good Wife in promos.Collapse )

On a completely unrelated note, I scrolled through my profile today and was saddened to see strikethroughs on two of my 45 remaining mutual friends' names (exactly 9 of whom I have seen on LJ within the past 2 years), but way more upset to see the CSI Fanfic Awards community in the same status. Who deleted that and why? Literally for what reason could you not just put up a notice saying the awards are closed, and leave the rest of that history right the fuck where it was as a monument to the decade past? I am so Put Out that I felt that the need to curse for emphasis. For added emphasis, let me quote you a thing from 2007 Me that I'd forgotten: Nominations are now open at csifanficawards, which is a wholly awesome place and may in fact have been the tipping point in convincing me to create an LJ.

Lastly: Melissa Benoist and Blake Jenner filed for divorce (like 2 months ago, that's how behind I am) and I am mad (if not surprised) because gdi don't separate the pretty like that before I have sufficient photos of your complementary prettiness and/or before you pass it on to a new generation.

Book Tetris

That is the only remaining solution. My shelves will never be organized again. All that matters is arranging them to fill all cubic shelf and out-of-the-way box space with as little damage as possible.

Most recent cover count shows approximately 85 remaining homeless books (floor, nightstand, dresser), and if I can just square the majority of them away, I'm going to declare victory. I'll make my peace with the other 80-odd displaced books living in stacks on my desk and lined up at the foot of my bed.

Some TV chatter

I. I haven't written about Surivor in for-ev-errrrrr because honestly, I just keep forgetting I've watched it. It's fun in the moment, but an exciting season this is not. So, random thoughts I've had over the past...I don't even know, 5 weeks?

I'm beginning to suspect that the reason Joel McHale signed on to The Great Indoors had nothing whatsoever to do with the premise and everything to do with insider knowledge that he would get to be in close proximity to and/or cuddle a bunch of tame wild animals. I can't believe this aspect was not hyped to the power of a million. He had a freaking lemur on his shoulder in the most recent episode.

Tiny post!

(because this was originally in a draft, and then I moved the draft to a new post but didn't have enough room for this but also not enough other content to make a new post, so one week later I'm just un-priviatzing what remains of the draft post)

I watched The Great Indoors, and all your arguments are irrelevant because JOEL MCHALE HOLDING A TINY BEAR CUB. I think this show would be a lot better without the weird and unnecessary hookup backstory/forced chemistry between him and his immediate supervisor, but so far I am entertained. Provided we ignore the logic gap of "how would a bear that still drinks from a bottle be willing/able to kill and eat a small dog." Also, my favorite part was Jack's Geocities-esque web page from 1996. I miss the design of Geocities pages so much.

Is this what having a weekend feels like???

I had to work 17+ hours between Thursday & Friday with another 3 on Saturday morning to make it happen, but I got my work squared away for the day by noon on Friday and was completely done by 12:30pm on Saturday, giving me the equivalent of one regular person weekend.  It was amazing and I celebrated by, between the 2 days...

Now can I pleeeeeease talk about TV while I wait for my NCIS: LA ship to roll in? (I haven't been actually excited for a TV show to air live for almost a month. Probably a bad sign.)

In "shows that are dumb" news, why can't I stop seeing The Good Place. Every time I turn the TV on, it's there. I'm not exaggerating.Collapse )

My ship content has rolled in, by the way, so let's dissect it. In more words than I've probably written about this show in my entire blog tenture.
